Rabat – Veron Mosengo-Omba has stepped down as Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), bringing an end to a tenure marked by both influence and controversy.
The Swiss-Congolese official announced his resignation on March 29, stating he wants to focus on “more personal projects.”
His departure comes while CAF’s Executive Committee meets in Cairo under President Patrice Motsepe, at a time when the organization continues to face scrutiny over governance and internal management.
Mosengo-Omba said he leaves with a sense of closure, pointing to recent developments that cleared him of earlier suspicions.
A private independent investigation in 2025 did not find evidence of wrongdoing, which he described as a turning point before he decided to step aside.

A contested tenure
Mosengo-Omba joined CAF in 2021 after a long career at FIFA, where he built close ties with senior leadership.
From the start, he took control of day-to-day operations and became one of the most powerful figures inside the organization.
However, his time in office drew criticism from within CAF. Reports raised concerns about governance practices, decision-making processes, and the concentration of power. Some staff and observers described an environment marked by tension and limited oversight.
Allegations also emerged around favoritism in appointments and the weakening of internal control systems.
People close to him said key committees lost independence, while important decisions moved into a smaller circle around the Secretary General.
Despite these claims, CAF leadership continued to back him, and he remained in position during a period of growing internal pressure.
Retirement rule and final phase
Another issue surrounded his age. CAF rules set a retirement limit at 63, with a possible extension of up to three years. Mosengo-Omba reached that extended limit in 2025, which raised legal questions about his continued role.
Even so, he stayed in office until this latest announcement, signing decisions and overseeing operations as usual – fueling debate about rule enforcement and governance within CAF.
His resignation now closes a chapter that exposed deeper issues inside African football’s governing body.
The debate around his leadership brings to light concerns about transparency, accountability, and institutional balance within the continental football body.
Amidst backlash, CAF has tried to project stability. The organization reported improved financial results and new sponsorship deals in recent years, while continuing to manage major competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mosengo-Omba leaves behind a mixed legacy. He played a central role in running CAF’s operations, but his tenure also raised lasting questions about how the organization functions at the highest level.
His exit may now open the door for changes in structure and leadership, as CAF looks to move forward and rebuild confidence around its governance.
