Teen Colombian Footballer Dies After Collapsing During Match

An 18-year-old Colombian footballer has tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during a youth match. Tributes have been pouring in from across the community with fans and clubs everywhere coming together to honor his memory.

Santiago Castrillón, an attacking midfielder for Millonarios FC’s U-20 side, passed away on Sunday March 22 one day after collapsing on the pitch.

Castrillón, who wore the No. 10 shirt, collapsed on Saturday, during a national youth championship match against rivals Independiente Santa Fe.

He was immediately treated by medical staff before being transported to a cardiology-specialized hospital in northern Bogotá, where he was admitted to intensive care. Despite the efforts of specialists, he could not be revived and passed away the following day, surrounded by his family.

Promising career cut short

Originally from Bucaramanga, Castrillón had been part of Millonarios’ academy since 2021 and was seen as one of the club’s brightest prospects.

He had regularly trained with the senior team and received his first official call-up for a top-flight match in October 2025, proving his rapid development.

Millonarios expressed deep sorrow in an official statement, saying the “blue heart is broken” following the loss of one of its young talents.

Tributes also came from across the football community, including Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, who shared condolences and support for the player’s family.

The incident comes nearly two years after the death of Guillermo Denis Beltrán, who passed away in March 2024 at the age of 24 after suffering a respiratory arrest during training in Bolivia.
