Rabat —  Somalia has rejected claims published by media outlets linked to the Algerian government regarding Mogadishu’s  position on the Western Sahara dispute.

Somalia said its official stance comes only through its formal statements and official channels.

The country stressed its commitment to strengthen cooperation with Morocco and maintain mutual respect for each nation’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Somalia said it takes  note of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, recognizing its central role in supporting the peaceful settlement process under exclusive UN supervision.

The UN Security Council adopted the resolution on October 31, endorsing the Autonomy Plan as the genuine political framework to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

The country also renewed support for  the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy’s efforts to restart political talks between the parties involved.

It  called on all parties to the dispute to enter serious, direct negotiations to reach a peaceful, final solution to the conflict.

Somalia said this approach serves the interests of the region’s people and aligns with relevant UN resolutions. This call reflects Somalia’s commitment to peaceful solutions and conflict resolution.

    Recent diplomatic meeting

Claims from outlets affiliated to the Algerian regime came a few weeks after Somalia renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory. The country welcomed the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797.

During a bilateral meeting in Rabat with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali reaffirmed his country’s consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In a joint statement signed after the ministers’ talks, Abdi Ali welcomed Resolution 2797, which establishes Morocco’s Autonomy Plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the basis for a fair and lasting settlement to reach a final solution.

Abdi Ali commended Morocco’s serious and realistic efforts to end what he called this artificial regional dispute. He expressed Somalia’s full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to the Sahara.
