Rabat – Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly been killed in Libya.

Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Khalifa said on Tuesday that Gaddafi is believed to have been shot and killed in the western city of Zintan.

Abdullah Othman, Gaddafi’s political adviser, confirmed the killing of Gaddafi’s son.

Al Jazeera stated that the “attackers and circumstances remain unclear,” with Libyan authorities still yet to comment publicly.

He was arrested in Zintan in 2011 after he attempted to flee the country following the killing of his father in 2011 by Libyan opposition forces.

Gaddafi’s son was released in 2017 in a general pardon.

Reports emphasized how, despite having no official position, Gaddafi’s son was still considered the most powerful figure in the oil-rich country.

“Saif al-Islam shaped policy and mediated high-profile, sensitive diplomatic missions,” Reuters said.
