Rabat – Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui said Morocco’s 2-0 win against Comoros in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last night was deserved, despite the difficulties of an opening game. He explained that opening matches in major tournaments are always tough, especially for the host country.
Morocco hoped to score early, but Sofiane Rahimi missed a penalty in the first half. Despite this setback, Regragui said the players stayed focused and continued to push forward. The first half was challenging, but Morocco kept control of the game.
Comoros began to struggle physically in the second half due to the constant pressure from the Moroccan players. Brahim Diaz opened the scoring, which gave the team more confidence and attacking options. Ayoub El Kaabi later scored the second goal through a stunning bicycle kick, which Regragui described as exceptional. The coach added that his substitutions helped bring more balance and calm to the team.
Regragui stated that the most important thing was securing the three points and starting the tournament in a positive way. He also spoke about the return of Achraf Hakimi after injury and the comeback of Sofyan Amrabat after a long absence, saying these were positive signs for the team.
The coach also spoke about the injury of captain Romain Saiss, saying the team hopes the injury is not serious, but admitted it is a blow, given Saiss’s experience.
Despite missing a penalty and losing their captain during the game, Regragui commended his players for maintaining a positive mindset under pressure. He also thanked the Moroccan fans, saying their support played a big role in lifting the players’ spirits.
Regragui said Morocco’s next match against Mali will be very difficult, as the Malian team has high-level players. He described it as a real test for both sides.
Man of the Match Brahim Diaz said the game was not easy, as Comoros defended deep for long periods. He added that the team must continue improving and scoring goals, noting that the win will boost confidence ahead of the next match. Diaz also said it was special to play in Rabat in front of Moroccan supporters.
With this victory, Morocco temporarily leads Group A with three points. Mali and Zambia will face each other today at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
