Police Action Brings Closure to Marrakech Tourist Extortion Case

Rabat – Moroccan authorities acted quickly after a video circulated online showing a foreign couple being extorted in Marrakech’s historic medina.

The Tourist Police Unit traced the British victim and his Filipino wife, confirmed their identities, and updated them on the investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest.

The suspect, a person with a prior criminal record, allegedly demanded money from the couple under the pretext of providing unlicensed tour guidance, while threatening them with violence.

The police investigation, triggered by the viral video, allowed officers to apprehend the individual and secure statements from the victims in line with legal procedures.

The couple later shared a video on social media to thank Moroccan authorities. They noted that officers contacted them directly at their hotel in the Amizmiz area to reassure them and confirm the suspect’s identity.

This case illustrates Moroccan authorities’ continued efforts to protect visitors and respond swiftly to incidents targeting tourists, reinforcing public confidence in local law enforcement.

The couple described the police response as professional and thorough, reflecting the standards of Morocco’s security services.
