Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer offered an update on social media Thursday following his Wednesday surgery.

“Thank God for a successful procedure,” Mateer wrote on X. “Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER.”

Mateer underwent surgery after suffering a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand in last Saturday’s win over Auburn. The Sooners have not disclosed a timeline for return.

Michael Hawkins Jr. will start for OU in next week’s game against Kent State. Hawkins started four games for the Sooners last season, passing for 783 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite suffering the injury early against the Tigers, Mateer finished the game and passed for 271 yards.

OU (4-0, 1-0 SEC) has a bye this weekend. Sooners coach Brent Venables and select players will address the media Thursday afternoon.
