Rabat – A routine traffic operation ahead of Ramadan iftar turned violent on Thursday evening in Casablanca, after a 27-year-old motorcyclist allegedly struck a police inspector at the entrance to the Rahma district.
The Judicial Police Brigade of the Rahma security district has opened a formal investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
The suspect faces potential charges that include driving in a prohibited lane, refusal to obey police orders, and intentional assault on a public officer while on duty.
According to initial findings, the officer stood at a busy intersection shortly before sunset on the first day of Ramadan.
Viral videos show traffic built up as families hurried home to break their fast. Police units had deployed to ease congestion and reduce the risk of accidents during one of the most sensitive hours of the day.
Investigators say the suspect approached from the lane reserved exclusively for the Busway, an area closed to motorcycles. The inspector signaled for him to stop. Instead, the rider seemed to accelerate.
Despite the officer’s attempt to step aside, the motorcycle hit him and severe injuries.
A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, which fueled public reaction and concern over road safety and respect for law enforcement officers.
Emergency services transferred the injured inspector to hospital, where he received medical care. Sources indicate that his condition remains stable.
Police placed the suspect in custody for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Prosecutors seek to clarify all details, including the motive behind the alleged refusal to comply and the circumstances that led to the collision.
