Rabat – Morocco’s General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced on Thursday that prison facilities across the country remain safe and fully operational despite the exceptional weather conditions that recently affected several regions.
In an official statement, the delegation said it moved quickly once heavy rains and flooding began to disrupt parts of the country.
Authorities raised alert levels inside prisons located in the most affected areas and ensured that staff remained fully mobilized. Strategic reserves of essential food supplies were secured, and access to healthcare and other core services for inmates continued without interruption.
The DGAPR stated that these early precautions helped preserve stability inside all institutions. While some roads that lead to prison facilities became temporarily inaccessible due to flooding, the disruptions did not last long.
Tangier 2 local prison faced the most serious logistical challenge after floodwaters from a nearby riverbed cut off the main road that leads to the facility.
In response, authorities coordinated with judicial officials to redirect newly admitted inmates to Asilah local prison on a temporary basis. Courts also relied on remote hearing mechanisms to ensure that legal procedures moved forward without delay.
In some cases, relatives could not reach certain prisons because of blocked roads. As a result, family visits were briefly suspended. To ease concerns and maintain contact between inmates and their families, the administration expanded access to landline phone services inside the facilities.
The DGAPR also addressed rumors shared on social media about the situation at Ksar El Kebir local prison. The delegation clarified that the institution has remained closed since October 2020, dismissing the circulating claims as inaccurate.
The prison authority commended the coordination between public institutions and partner sectors during this period of severe weather. It also acknowledged the efforts of prison staff, who ensured continuity of services under difficult circumstances.
The delegation confirmed that it continues to monitor weather developments closely and stands ready to adopt further measures, in coordination with relevant authorities, to protect inmates, staff, and visitors until conditions fully stabilize.
