Rabat – Moroccan international Issa Diop expressed his satisfaction following the Atlas Lions’ 2-1 victory over Paraguay in an international friendly, emphasizing that winning remains the key objective during the World Cup 2026 preparation phase.

Speaking after the match, the newly integrated defender highlighted the importance of results, even when performances are not yet perfect. “It’s always great to win matches, especially during this stage of preparation for the World Cup. Even if everything isn’t ideal, we won, and that’s what matters most,” he said.

Building chemistry under a new system:

Diop stressed that the overall assessment of the team’s recent performances remains positive, particularly given the ongoing transition within the squad. With several new players and a new coaching setup, he noted that the group is still building chemistry and adapting to fresh tactical principles.

“I think the overall outcome of the two matches is very positive. There are many new players, and we are getting to know each other under a new coaching staff with a new playing style. So overall, the evaluation is good,” he explained.

The defender also pointed out that, despite limited preparation time, the team managed to implement certain tactical ideas successfully. He added that friendly matches like these are crucial steps in building momentum ahead of major tournaments.

Fans play a key role in Morocco’s win

Diop also praised the Moroccan supporters, who played a significant role throughout the match. “The fans were incredible. The stadium was full, and we were very happy with their support. They pushed us throughout the game and motivated us to give our best. They are truly the 12th player,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Diop described the victory as an important morale boost for the team. “It’s our first win, and it feels great—especially in preparation matches for the World Cup. It’s a good indicator of what’s to come,” he concluded.
