Morocco’s Diaspora Remittances Reached Over $13.3 Billion in 2025

Rabat – Remittances from Moroccans residing abroad reached MAD 122.02 billion ($13.377 billion) by the end of 2025.

The number shows an increase by 2.6% from the year prior, which recorded MAD 118.97 billion ($13 billion), according to the latest figures from the Foreign Exchange Office.

This reinforces Morocco’s position as among the top recipients of diaspora remittances in Africa.

In 2023, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita said remittances transferred from Africa’s diaspora are “the most expensive in the world, averaging 8%, while it averages 6% in other regions.”

He added that for each “$200 a member of the African diaspora transfers, Africa pays $16, while Asia pays less than $10.”

Last year, Bank Al Maghrib expected Morocco’s economy to grow by 5% in 2025, predicting that diaspora remittances would remain strong. The central bank forecasts remittances from Moroccans living abroad to grow by 3.1% on average annually between 2025 and 2027, reaching MAD 130 billion ($14.25 billion).

By 2027, the bank expects remittances to reach MAD 448 billion  ($49.114 billion), a number that would equal nearly five and a half months of imports of goods and services.

In 2021, the government announced that only 10% of the diaspora transfers are directed towards investment, mainly in land and real estate.

Around 15% of the diaspora remittances are for savings, while the majority of the remittances go to solidarity and support for families.

King Mohammed VI has frequently emphasized the importance of enhancing efforts to support Morocco’s diaspora, including facilitating their administrative procedures and supporting their business ventures in Morocco.

Among these efforts are reforms and initiatives seeking to create a more favorable environment for Morocco’s diaspora to invest in Morocco, including direct housing aid.

The direct aid aims to make housing more accessible for Moroccans both within and outside the country by providing direct subsidies to first-time homeowners.
