Morocco Reports About 16.5 Million Registered Voters Ahead of 2026 Elections

Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, told the Chamber of Councillors on Tuesday that the provisional number of registered voters on the national electoral lists has reached about 16.5 million during the current stage of the annual update process.

Minister Laftit said that 54% of registered voters are men and 46% are women. Around 55% live in urban areas while 45% are in rural parts of the country.

Authorities recorded 382,170 new registrations during this year’s revision. Of those, 254,740 were submitted online using the official voter registration platform, and 127,430 were filed in writing at local administrative offices.

Laftit also noted that the cleanup process removed about 1.4 million entries from the lists for legal reasons. The most common were loss of effective residence in the registered commune or district, duplicate registrations, deaths, and loss of voting eligibility. These efforts aim to make the voter lists more accurate and reflective of the actual electorate.

This update comes as Morocco prepares for the 2026 legislative elections, expected to take place later this year. The revision of voter lists is part of preparations to ensure eligible voters can participate in the elections.

Authorities have also published provisional electoral roll updates for public review. These tables, showing new registrations, transfers, removals, and corrections, are available for inspection at local administrative and municipal offices, and voters can check their registration status online.

In addition, the Interior Ministry is planning a media and communication campaign to encourage more people, especially young citizens, to register during the upcoming exceptional 30-day revision window designed to bring in more first-time voters before the polls.

While registration has been open since late 2025 and closed on December 31, the current review and cleanup phase aims to finalize the lists ahead of the election year.

Ahead of this update, Moroccan embassies around the world encouraged Moroccans living abroad to register or transfer their registration before the end of December to ensure they are included on the general electoral lists.
