Morocco Emerges as Baleària’s Top International Market in 2025

Rabat– Morocco has strengthened its position as the leading international market for the Spanish shipping company Baleària in 2025, according to the group’s president, Adolfo Utor.

The announcement came during the presentation of the company’s annual results, which highlighted a sharp rise in maritime traffic between southern Spain and Morocco.

Utor emphasized that Morocco has confirmed its status as Baleària’s foremost international destination, pointing in particular to the growth of Strait of Gibraltar routes following the launch of the Tarifa–Tangier line. The expansion of connections across the Strait has significantly boosted passenger and freight flows between the two shores.

Company data show that international traffic surged by 68% in 2025, nearing two million passengers. Overall, Baleària transported 6.5 million passengers during the year, marking a 15% increase, along with 1.6 million vehicles, up 11% compared to the previous year.

Routes linking Spain with North Africa now generate revenue comparable to that of the company’s traditional Balearic Islands services. Total revenues reached approximately $865 million, marking a 16% increase, while net profit surged 152% year-on-year to around $68 million.

Freight activity also posted strong growth. Trade flows with Morocco accounted for 29% of total cargo volume, representing 8.4 million linear meters, up 10%, equivalent to approximately 622,000 trucks. Cargo transport contributed 36% of the company’s overall revenue, an indication of its strategic role in ensuring logistical continuity between Europe and North Africa.

Looking ahead, Baleària is further consolidating its presence on the Spain–Morocco axis through the development of a sustainable maritime corridor. The initiative includes the construction of two fully electric fast ferries to operate on the Tarifa–Tangier route, forming part of what the company describes as the first green corridor between the two countries.
