Moroccan Authorities Seize 20kg of Cocaine at Guerguerat Border Crossing

Casablanca – Moroccan police and customs officers seized 20 kilograms of cocaine during a joint operation at the Guerguerat border crossing, south of Dakhla, on Thursday evening.

The drugs were discovered during routine border checks and search procedures. They had been carefully hidden inside specially modified compartments built into the floor of a freight truck used for international transport. The vehicle, which carried foreign license plates, had arrived from a country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Officers arrested the driver, a 64-year-old Moroccan national, at the scene.

Investigators have opened a preliminary inquiry under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office. The goal is to piece together how the operation was organized and to identify any other people involved.

Authorities are also trying to trace possible links to wider trafficking networks, both inside Morocco and beyond its borders.

The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by security services stationed at the Guerguerat crossing, a key crossing point linking Morocco to West Africa. Officials say checks have been tightened in recent years as part of broader attempts to curb cross-border crime.

Operations like this happen regularly. But the scale and method used in this case point to a structured network operating across multiple countries.
