Belgian coach Yannick Ferrera has expressed strong support for the appointment of Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach of the Morocco national football team, insisting the timing of the decision is right and carries no risk for the Moroccan tactician’s career.
Speaking in an interview on the “Hat-trick” program on Egypt’s ON Sports TV, Ferrera recalled that he has known Ouahbi for nearly two decades, having worked alongside him during their time at R.S.C. Anderlecht and Morocco’s FUS Rabat.
“The most important thing that distinguishes Mohamed is his personality before football. On the human side, he is a very kind person who loves his players, and the players also love him. He cares deeply about them, and this is very important,” he said.
Ferrera also gave a shout-out to Ouahbi’s tactical qualities, describing him as a thoughtful and intelligent coach capable of bringing fresh ideas to the national team.
“From a technical standpoint, he is an excellent coach. He excels at organizing the team and always ensures that every player is in their correct position and moving in the right direction. He is also very humble and very intelligent, knowing what he wants and what needs to be done. He is capable of bringing important ideas to the Moroccan national team.”
‘A great opportunity’
The Belgian coach believes Ouahbi’s promotion to the senior national team after his huge success with Morocco’s youth team is a natural step and a valuable opportunity, even with the pressure of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“After his great success with the youth team, I believe the timing is very suitable and poses no risk to his professional career. This is a great opportunity for him, regardless of the World Cup results.”
Ouahbi built a solid reputation through his work with Morocco’s youth teams and has now been entrusted with guiding the Atlas Lions during a crucial pre-World Cup period as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions with only 3 months left.
Ferrera concluded by expressing confidence that Ouahbi’s coaching journey will continue to grow after this new challenge. “His career will undoubtedly continue, and he deserves this step after the outstanding work he has done with the youth team.”
Morocco is preparing for 2 friendlies ahead of the World Cup in a few weeks. Ouahbi now faces the challenge of building on the country’s recent success while leading the Atlas Lions into a new chapter.
