Messi Risks Suspension After Furious Clash With Officials in LAFC Defeat

Rabat – Lionel Messi’s return to MLS ended in frustration as Inter Miami lost 3-0 to Los Angeles FC in their season opener. Goals from David Martinez, Denis Bouanga, and Nathan Ordaz sealed a convincing win for LAFC and left Miami’s title defense off to a poor start.

Messi, back from a minor injury, struggled to make an impact. He created chances but looked frustrated throughout the game, especially with referee Pierre‑Luc Lauziere.

After the final whistle, Messi’s anger boiled over. A viral clip shows him trying to follow the match officials before teammate Luis Suárez pulled him back.

The incident has sparked debate. Reporter Franco Panizo noted that FC Cincinnati defender Matt Miazga was suspended for three games in 2023 after entering the referees’ room.

Messi did not go that far, but his actions could still lead to disciplinary review. MLS fans have already questioned whether the Argentine star might face a similar sanction.

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano admitted his team was second best. “They beat us fair and square, that’s the reality,” he said. “The score feels misleading because the game itself didn’t show that difference. Los Angeles hurt us in transitions. We’re not going to make a tragedy out of it; we know we have to improve.”

Despite the defeat, Messi appeared calm once emotions cooled. He shook hands with teammates and LAFC players, including Bouanga and Son Heung‑min. But the footage of him being restrained by Suarez has dominated headlines and raised questions about his discipline.

Inter Miami now turn their focus to Orlando City on March 1 at Inter&Co Stadium. The club will hope to secure their first win of the season and avoid further controversy.
