Medhi Benatia Slams Marseille as ‘Scandal’ Defeat Deepens Crisis

After Olympique de Marseille fell 2–0 to FC Lorient yesterday, Medhi Benatia expressed his disappointment. The club’s sporting director, visibly furious, broke his silence and labeled the performance ‘a scandal.’

The reaction was immediate and explosive.

‘I didn’t want to speak… but when I see this match, I have to say it: it’s a scandal,’ he said. ‘When you play against a team that is practically already on vacation while you have five ‘finals’ left to reach the Champions League, this is unacceptable.’

Visibly angered by what he saw as a lack of commitment, Benatia spoke in the mixed zone with rare bluntness, denouncing an attitude he considers unacceptable, especially at a moment when Marseille are effectively playing ‘finals’ in their push for European qualification.

The defeat itself was damaging, but for Benatia, the way it unfolded crossed the line. Facing a struggling Lorient side, Marseille delivered a flat and lifeless performance. No intensity, no aggression, no urgency.

‘You don’t win a duel, you don’t run forward, you don’t try anything,’ he added, pointing directly at what he sees as a recurring issue.

He even called on the players to take responsibility and demanded accountability. Benatia openly questioned individual errors, a lack of motivation, and a pattern of underperforming against supposedly weaker opposition.

“The performances are not worthy of a club like Marseille. We talk about self-respect, and respect for the jersey we wear. Today, I didn’t see any of that.”

Even more telling was his description of the dressing room after the match. No anger, no reaction, no one flipping the table. For him, that silence was a lack of commitment from the players.

And it won’t go unanswered. Benatia warned of ‘a severe turn of the screw’, a tightening of discipline and expectations for the remainder of the season.

This wasn’t an isolated reaction. It comes in a wider context where Benatia himself has been at the center of tension.

More recently, his position inside the club has appeared fragile. Reports of internal tensions with club president Pablo Longoria surfaced earlier in 2026, with Benatia even offering his resignation in February, an offer that was ultimately refused.

All of this adds weight to his latest comments. When someone in that position speaks this openly, it’s often more than just one bad night.
