Rabat – The Korea International Cooperation Agency, known as KOICA, signed an agreement with Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE) to strengthen Morocco’s industrial decarbonization and green skills.
A statement shared by KOICA said that the $13.5 million project aims to promote industrial decarbonization and capacity building in Morocco.
Ambassador of Korea to Morocco Yeonjean Yoon attended the signing ceremony of the agreement signed between country director of KOICA Hyewon Cho and Mohamed Benyahia, the director general of AMEE.
The project will be implemented from 2026-2030 to accelerate Morocco’s commitment towards industrial decarbonisation and strengthening energy efficiency in key sectors.
The KOICA and AMEE are also partnering with UN industrial Development Organisation and International Labour Organization on the project.
Ambassador Yoon commended the agreement, saying the initiative reflects the strong cooperation and partnership between Morocco and Korea.
“Together, we are reinforcing our strategic cooperation in sustainable development and climate action, advancing shared goals for a resilient and low-carbon future.”
KOICA country director Cho also echoed satisfaction with the agreement; stating the project is part of Korea’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s climate ambitions and sustainable industrial development.
“By sharing technology, expertise, and experience, we aim to help build a skilled workforce and accelerate the country’s green transition,” Cho added.
For his part, AMEE’s general director described the project as a “large-scale” initiative that fully aligns with Morocco’s energy transition.
Benyahia touched upon the project’s multidimensional impact, focused on industrial energy performance, skills development and professional integration.
The agreement also boosts partnership between Morocco and Korea, he added.
Morocco has been making efforts to decarbonize its industry sector, with the government describing it as the most effective tool to improve competitiveness for national industry.
The national renewable energy strategy, launched in 2009, formed the foundations this decarbonization process, placing Morocco among competitive countries in terms of green energy production.
Among key initiatives is an agreement Morocco’s fertilizer group signed in 2024 to boost decarbonizing the country’s industrial fabric as well as sustainable development and inclusive agriculture.
OCP signed the agreement with Bpifrance and the French Development Agency as part of the group’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives.
The agreement also involves the creation of a €50 million investment fund by Bpifrance and Innovx, an affiliate of Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P).
The fund aims to invest in initiatives supporting innovative startups, small and medium enterprises as well as mid-sized enterprises in Africa, particularly in the agricultural, agri-food and green energy sectors.
