A shooter has opened fire during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, triggering the evacuation of US President Donald Trump.
Security services escorted the president out after possible shots were fired on Saturday.
Many other attendees, including Vice President JD Vance and other members of Trump’s cabinet, were also rushed out.
CNN quoted a source who confirmed Trump is safe.
Two sources also said Vance was safely escorted out.
“According to an administration official, Cabinet members are OK as well,” CNN reported.
One person is in custody for interrogation.
On Truth Social, Trump announced that a “shooter has been apprehended,” applauding Secret Service members and law enforcement officers for acting “quickly and bravely.”
After the incident, Trump said he is returning to the White House after law enforcement officials requested that he leave the location.
In July 2024, an election campaign rally led by Trump before the elections was abruptly thrown into disarray following an alleged assassination attempt against the Republican President.
The event took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, with hundreds of supporters.
The unsettling incident sent attendees into a state of panic as the sound of what appeared to be gunfire echoed through the venue.
