Rabat–The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced plans to hold a special meeting in the coming days to conduct a comprehensive review of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco.

In a statement following the federation’s executive board meeting on Thursday, February 26, the FRMF stressed that the legal proceedings related to incidents during the tournament’s final match remain ongoing.

The federation criticized what it described as “unfair” sanctions issued by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against the Moroccan national team and confirmed it would continue pursuing the matter through official legal channels to safeguard the integrity of Moroccan football.

Morocco faced several sanctions after the controversial 2025 AFCON final. The match saw the Senegalese team act in an unlawful manner, walking off the pitch in the final moments after a VAR-verified penalty was awarded to Morocco. Senegalese fans broke out in fits of vandalism and violence, from which 18 are facing current sentences in Moroccan courts.

Captain Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two matches, Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban and $100,000 fine, and the FRMF was fined around $315,000 for various incidents. CAF also rejected Morocco’s appeal for the match result, confirming Senegal as champions.

FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa focused on two main points during the meeting: the international standing of Moroccan football in the short and medium term, and the domestic professional league. His commented that the current season is exceptional due to the hosting of multiple major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, the African Nations Championship for local players, and the Arab Cup.

The meeting also addressed updates to the regulations governing the national professional league. Abdel Salam Belkchour, head of the league, presented a series of proposed amendments for approval. These changes cover the league’s statutes, rules for general assemblies, club eligibility and compliance audits, and other legal recommendations affecting league operations.

Finally, Belkchour reminded the board of the scheduling challenges faced by the programming committee. The executive board approved the league’s proposal to ensure that national championship matches are completed on schedule despite the season’s exceptional demands.
