Rabat – Iranian state media announced today that former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and current member of the Expediency Discernment Council, was reportedly killed in the US-Israel missile strike that targeted the capital, Tehran, late Saturday.
The reports did not provide further details on the circumstances of the strike or the identities of those killed, as authorities continue to assess the aftermath.
This comes amid rapidly rising tensions in the Middle East, following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks, plunging the region into an unprecedented crisis.
US President Donald Trump announced the start of “major combat operations,” describing the joint US-Israeli strikes as a response to what he claimed to be “imminent threats” from Iran.
He said the campaign aimed to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities, weaken its naval forces, and prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the strikes as a move against an “existential threat” to Israel, urging Iranians to “cast off the yoke of tyranny” and suggesting the operation could pave the way for internal change.
Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at Israel and US-affiliated targets across the Gulf.
This also follows the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the US-Israeli strike on his compound in Tehran.
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History is dead,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Global leaders have voiced alarm over the developments, with many denouncing Iran’s attacks on targets in the Gulf region, while others call for Israel and the US to de-escalate their illegal aggression.
