Rabat – The death toll from the flash floods that hit the city of Safi on Sunday has risen to 21, according to authorities. The figure was confirmed late tonight after heavy rainfall caused widespread damage across the city.

Videos shared online show harrowing scenes of streets completely covered in water. Cars appear almost floating, while residents are seen struggling to move through strong currents and trying to rescue others.

One widely shared video shows an elderly woman holding onto parts of a wall as floodwaters rise around her. She was close to being swept away, but people nearby managed to save her.

The floods also caused serious damage to buildings in several areas. Some walls collapsed, and parts of the city were left badly affected by the powerful flow of water.

Due to safety concerns, the regional directorate of education announced the suspension of classes on Monday in all public and private schools across the city.

The disaster has sparked strong reactions online. Many social media users expressed shock and anger, questioning why the damage was so severe.

Some asked whether weather warnings were issued early enough, while others criticized the city’s infrastructure, saying it may not be prepared to handle such extreme weather.

Meanwhile, authorities said all relevant services remain fully mobilized to continue searching for possible missing persons, carry out field interventions, secure affected areas, and provide support and assistance to the communities impacted by this exceptional situation.

They confirmed that dozens of injured people were treated, most of whom were discharged after receiving the necessary medical care, while the remaining cases are still under medical observation.
