Cowboys agree to $96M contract extension with Pro Bowl G Tyler Smith that’s the largest in NFL history for an interior lineman

The Dallas Cowboys have shored up a key piece of their offensive line for the long term.

Per NFL Network, the Cowboys and Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith have agreed to a four-year, $96 million extension to his rookie contract. The contract comes with $81.2 million in guaranteed money and makes Smith the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in the NFL.

The Cowboys selected Smith in the first round (No. 24) of the 2022 NFL Draft. A tackle at Tulsa, Smith was slated to play guard for the Cowboys when they drafted him, but he filled in for much of his rookie season at left tackle due to an injury to All-Pro Tyron Smith.

With Tyron healthy for most of 2023, Smith moved to the interior line for his second NFL season and has thrived as one of the game’s best guards since. Smith was named second-team All-Pro in 2023 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2024 for a second-straight season.

Smith is playing this season on the fourth year of his four-year, $13.4 million rookie contract. The Cowboys reportedly exercised the $21.2 million fifth-year option on his deal for 2026 prior to April’s draft.

Amid an offseason in which the Cowboys failed to reach an agreement with All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons, Smith and the team were reportedly engaged in talks during training camp about an extension. Week 1 arrived without a new deal.

But now the Cowboys have the leader off their offensive line under contract for the foreseeable future on a lucrative contract that got done ahead of Sunday’s Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants. Prior to Smith’s extension, Chiefs Pro Bowler Trey Smith was the NFL’s highest-paid guard with a four-year, $92 million contract that he signed in July.
