    Selection questions frame England narrative

England’s meeting with Serbia at Wembley arrives at a moment when the search for balance, identity and competition within the squad feels particularly acute. Much of the conversation has centred on Jude Bellingham, who is set for his first England appearance since June, yet the nuances around his role have become an intriguing subplot. As Thomas Tuchel put it, “At the moment the competition is between the two of them. They are friends, so it can also be a friendly competition.” The reference is to Bellingham and Morgan Rogers, both vying for the No10 position in a structure that Tuchel has been reluctant to shift.

What is striking is not simply who plays ahead of the World Cup, but what England’s predicted lineup says about the broader tactical direction. The head coach has emphasised keeping much of the existing “structure” intact and is expected to persist with his preferred 4-2-3-1, a shape that has been his anchor since taking charge.

    Midfield dilemmas and returning names

Bellingham and Phil Foden are both back in the squad after missing September and October, but neither is guaranteed a starting place. Rogers, meanwhile, has made a persuasive case for continuity, with Tuchel stating that he will not make “dramatic changes to the side.”

At the base of midfield, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have formed an increasingly consistent pairing. Tuchel’s trust in them suggests England will not deviate from the double pivot that has been present for two months, offering security but also responsibility in progressing attacks.

    Defensive adjustments and enforced absences

Marc Guehi will remain with the squad but will not feature due to a bruised ankle, a minor but unwelcome disruption. Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon have both withdrawn through injury, with James Trafford and Trevoh Chalobah replacing them on Tuesday. Ezri Konsa, having taken media duties in the pre match press conference, appears set to start.

These tweaks around the edges support the sense that Tuchel’s decisions are evolution rather than overhaul, with availability shaping choices as much as form.

    England predicted lineup

England predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford, James, Konsa, Stones, Spence, Anderson, Rice, Saka, Rogers, Rashford, Kane.

    Injured: Guehi, Gordon, Pope.

Time and date: 7:45pm GMT today, Thursday November 13, 2025.
    Venue: Wembley Stadium.
    TV channel: ITV.
