Barcelona Target Julian Alvarez as Lewandowski Nears Exit

Rabat – Barcelona have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a possible move for Julian Alvarez, as the club prepares for life after Robert Lewandowski.

Head coach Hansi Flick is pushing for a new number 9. Alvarez, 26, has been tracked by Barcelona scouts since his River Plate days before his move to Manchester City.

He joined Atletico in 2024 for a fee close to $95 million and is tied to a $500m release clause. Atletico reportedly value him at around $120m, making negotiations difficult for president Joan Laporta.

Barcelona hope Alvarez’s interest in a switch could mirror Antoine Griezmann’s past move between the clubs, but Atletico remain firm on their valuation.

    Lewandowski’s Future

The pursuit of Alvarez is tied directly to Lewandowski’s situation. The Polish striker will be 38 next season and, despite his scoring record, Barcelona are preparing for a transition.

Reports in Italy suggest Juventus and AC Milan are leading the race to sign him as a free agent, offering him a guaranteed starting role.

Barcelona have considered offering him new terms, but they involve a pay cut and reduced importance in the squad.

Lewandowski is keen to remain at the top level, making the most likely outcome. His departure would ease the wage bill and allow Barcelona to invest in a younger forward.

    Agent denies rumors

Speculation about Alvarez’s family house‑hunting in Barcelona was dismissed by his agent, Fernando Hidalgo, who called the reports “1000% false.” He clarified that the family had only visited Catalonia for a match against Atletico before returning to Madrid.

Barcelona are also monitoring Marcus Rashford, currently on loan in Spain, and Moroccan international Abde Ezzalzouli of Real Betis.

The club may listen to offers for Ferran Torres as they reshape the attack. Financial fair play remains a challenge, but officials are optimistic about returning to La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule this summer, which would be key to funding a major signing.
