Barcelona Push for Atletico Comeback as La Liga Title Moves Closer

Rabat – Barcelona walked off the pitch to loud cheers after beating Espanyol 4-1, with the result moving them closer to the La Liga title. But inside the club, the focus had already shifted.

Barcelona now prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid; they trail 2-0 from the first leg.

Inside the dressing room, belief remains strong. Players feel they can turn the tie around. The motivation is also personal. Atletico have already knocked them out of the Copa del Rey this season. The team does not want the same story again.

Head coach Hansi Flick stressed before the Espanyol game that “La Liga is why we play in the Champions League.,” But, he conceded, “the dream for every manager, player and fan is to win the Champions League.”

    Confidence grows after Espanyol win

The performance against Espanyol helped the team’s morale as they chase a European result. Barcelona controlled the game and scored four goals.

The stadium was full, with over 60,000 fans in attendance. After the final whistle, players stayed on the pitch and celebrated with supporters.

Ferran Torres also stood out. He scored after more than two months without a goal. Then he added a second. It was a sign that his confidence is returning at the right time.

That could be important for the Atletico game. Robert Lewandowski is expected to start, but Torres has given Flick another option. His form gives the coach more flexibility in attack.

    Key players and fitness updates

Pedri is still not at his best level. But Lamine Yamal continues to lead the attack. The 18-year-old remains the most dangerous player going forward.

In defense, there was a small concern. Gerard Martin left the game with an ankle issue. At first, it looked serious. Later, it was described as a minor problem, and he should be available for the next match.

In midfield, Frenkie de Jong has returned from injury. He played a few minutes against Espanyol. His presence could be key in Madrid.

    A different approach ahead

Barcelona are also making changes beyond the current matches.

This summer, the club will not travel far for pre-season. Instead of going to the United States or Asia, they plan to stay closer to Europe. The team is expected to train in England before playing friendly matches, including some in Morocco.

But for now, all attention is on Atletico; Barcelona have momentum and confidence. But they also have a deficit to overcome.

The next match will define their season.
