Rabat – Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf has expressed growing concern that rising star Ayoub Oufkir might choose to represent Morocco instead of The Netherlands, despite his strong performances with the Netherlands U-21 national team.
The outlet highlighted Oufkir’s impressive start, noting his decisive role in the Netherlands U21’s 2-1 victory over Belgium.
The newspaper also drew attention to the recurring trend of dual-nationality players opting to represent Morocco rather than the Netherlands, particularly given the international successes of the Atlas Lions.
“Will Oufkir be the next player to choose Morocco after his outstanding debut with the Netherlands Under-21 team?” the newspaper wrote in its headline.
Ayoub Oufkir (20) is a rising talent of Moroccan descent who primarily plays as a winger or forward. He began his career with Sparta Rotterdam, making 22 appearances and scoring once, while also featuring for Jong Sparta with 27 appearances and nine goals.
In December 2025, he signed with AZ Alkmaar on a contract running until 2030 and has already made key contributions this season, appearing in 26 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
Oufkir’s decision regarding which national team he will represent remains uncertain, leaving the door open for the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to attempt to secure his services.
