Atlas Lions Reach Historic 8th Place in FIFA Rankings

Rabat – Despite the heartbreak of the AFCON 2025 final, Morocco has achieved a historic milestone with the Atlas Lions climbing to 8th in the FIFA World Rankings for January 2026.

This marks the highest ranking in Morocco’s history since the creation of the FIFA rankings and returns the team to the Top 10 for the first time since April 1998.

The AFCON left a clear mark on the global rankings. Morocco gained three spots, reaching 8th, while Senegal, crowned champions, surged seven positions to 12th, their best ranking ever.

For Morocco, the rise represents more than numbers. It reflects the team’s resilience, skill, and ability to capture the attention of football fans worldwide, even in defeat.

This leap reshaped the rankings immediately below the top. Belgium moved to 9th, Germany fell to 10th, and Croatia dropped out of the Top 10 to 11th.

Meanwhile, the top three positions remained stable, with Spain leading, followed by Argentina and France.

Other African countries also benefited from the tournament. Nigeria, finishing third, climbed 12 spots to 26th, while Cameroon rose to 45th, also gaining 12 positions.

The rankings show Africa’s growing presence on the global stage and the impact of strong performances at continental competitions.

Morocco’s new position in the world rankings sends the powerful message that the Atlas Lions belong among the elite, and their journey continues to inspire a nation still proud of the team’s performance at AFCON.
