As Compact Cars Lead Morocco, Can EXEED’s VX PHEV Carve Out a Niche?

Casablanca – Morocco’s fast-growing auto market is opening new space for larger electrified SUVs, even as compact and practical models continue to dominate overall sales, a trend that sets the stage for EXEED’s VX PHEV launch in the country.

The timing is notable. Morocco’s automobile market grew by a record 33% in 2025, with total sales reaching 235,372 units, up from 176,401 a year earlier, according to figures previously released by the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM). The expansion was driven by stronger consumer demand, improved financing capacity, and rising interest in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Still, demand patterns point in a different direction. Morocco’s top-selling models in 2025 were led by the Dacia Logan, Dacia Sandero, Renault Express, Renault Clio, and Dacia Duster, with the Peugeot 208 and Hyundai Tucson also among the strongest performers.

The ranking suggests Moroccan buyers continue to prioritize compact sedans, hatchbacks, and practical crossovers that combine competitive pricing, low running costs, strong resale value, and nationwide service networks.

Larger seven-seat SUVs remain a smaller part of the market, mostly tied to bigger households, upper-income buyers, and fleet or chauffeur use rather than mainstream demand.

It is into that still-limited but gradually expanding segment that M-AUTOMOTIV plans to introduce EXEED’s VX PHEV. Rather than competing with the country’s high-volume city cars and compact crossovers, the model is positioned closer to a premium family-SUV niche where space, comfort, and electrified performance matter more than entry-level pricing.

According to the company’s press release, the plug-in hybrid model will offer seven seats, all-wheel drive, a combined 503 horsepower, 745 Nm of torque, and a claimed range of up to 1,218 kilometers.

A niche with room to grow

According to the launch press release, the VX PHEV model includes leather seating, climate and massage functions for front passengers, heated rear rows, a panoramic roof, advanced camera visibility tools, multiple driving modes, adaptive suspension technology, and more than 20 driver-assistance systems.

Taken together, the specification sheet points to a deliberate push toward buyers who are less price-sensitive and more focused on cabin space, long-distance comfort, and technology features, a customer profile that remains smaller than the market’s dominant compact-car base but is gradually expanding.

Its arrival also fits into another shift taking shape in Morocco’s market, the gradual rise of Chinese automakers.

17 Chinese brands were active in Morocco last year, accounting for roughly one-third of all marques present, though their sales share still remained well below that of European manufacturers.

The most visible gains came from BYD, which has emerged as the leading Chinese name in Morocco’s electrified segment, alongside faster-growing players such as Geely, Changan, and Chery.

Other brands beginning to establish a foothold include Great Wall Motor and newer arrivals such as Soueast, which climbed to 14th place in Morocco’s January 2026 passenger-car brand rankings, reaching a 1.7% share only shortly after entering the market.

This leaves Chinese premium brands like EXEED in an interesting position. They are entering a market where mainstream buyers still favor compact, value-driven cars, but where demand is slowly broadening toward electrified SUVs with more space, stronger performance, and higher-end comfort.

For now, the VX PHEV looks less like a mass-market play and more like a bet on where Morocco’s auto demand may be heading next.
