Morocco Launches New Development Drive in Tafraout

Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch led the launch of several development projects in Tafraout on Monday, as authorities move to improve public services and address gaps between regions.

Senior officials attended the visit, including representatives from the health sector and regional authorities from Souss-Massa, along with local elected officials.

The visit marked the start of construction plans for a new proximity hospital in Tafraout. The project covers four hectares and carries a budget of MAD 227 million ($24.5 million), with a planned capacity of 45 beds.

The facility targets residents of Tiznit Province, where access to healthcare often requires long trips to larger cities. Authorities expect the hospital to serve around 70,000 people and ease pressure on existing facilities.

The hospital will provide general medicine, specialized consultations, surgery, maternity services, pediatrics, and intensive care. It will also include radiology and treatment for respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Officials say the project should also improve working conditions for medical staff.

Economic development formed another key part of the visit. Officials presented plans for a space dedicated to the display and sale of traditional crafts, alongside improvements to the local handicrafts market. The initiative seeks to support artisans and attract more visitors to the area.

Authorities also launched work on a weekly market, a livestock market, and a new slaughterhouse built to modern standards. The market complex will extend over more than 16,000 square meters and should create jobs while offering better conditions for traders and breeders.

The slaughterhouse aims to improve hygiene standards and reduce losses in the meat sector, with regular veterinary supervision planned.

The visit also introduced a broader set of projects planned for Tafraout. These include upgrades to urban infrastructure and the rehabilitation of neighborhoods that lack basic equipment.

Plans also include green spaces with areas for children, a student residence, a multi-purpose facility, a summer camp, and a new municipal building. Authorities also reviewed a project for a local sports field with artificial turf, along with supporting facilities.

Officials say these initiatives form part of a wider effort to strengthen territorial development and ensure that public investment reaches communities across Morocco.
