Trump Says Iran War ‘Close to Over’ as Blockade on Hormuz Strait Tightens

Rabat – US President Donald Trump said the war with Iran is “very close to over,” signaling a possible diplomatic breakthrough as Washington prepares for a new round of talks with Tehran.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said negotiations could resume soon in Pakistan, adding that Iran appears eager to reach a deal.

His comments come as the US intensifies pressure on Iran, with the military saying it has “completely halted” maritime trade to and from the country. The naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz has now entered its second day.

This has raised concerns about global energy supplies and escalating tensions in the region. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that continued disruption to oil markets could push the global economy toward recession. Rising fuel and food prices are already affecting vulnerable countries like Sudan, where aid groups report worsening conditions.

Despite the blockade, Iranian officials insist it will not be effective. Authorities in Tehran say ships are still reaching their ports and stress that the country’s extensive land and sea borders make it difficult to isolate. Iran has also signaled it remains open to diplomacy, with officials confirming that indirect exchanges of messages with the US have continued through Pakistani mediators.

At the same time, Washington is reinforcing its military presence in the region. Reports indicate that thousands of additional US troops will be deployed to the Middle East in the coming days.

Regional actors are stepping up efforts to calm the situation. Senior officials from the United Arab Emirates and Iran held a rare phone call to discuss de-escalation, while Gulf countries are working with Pakistan to bring both sides back to the negotiating table.

Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also urged the protection of the ceasefire and warned against actions that could derail talks.

Meanwhile, the war continues to spill over into neighboring countries, particularly Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes have hit multiple areas in the south and near Beirut, while Hezbollah has launched rockets into northern Israel. Israeli attacks have displaced large numbers of civilians in Lebanon and continue to claim the lives of innocent people.
