Morocco, DR Congo Reaffirm Strong Ties as Envoy Delivers Message to King Mohammed VI

Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita held talks on Friday in Rabat with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, President of the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and special envoy of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi.

The Congolese official delivered a message addressed to King Mohammed VI from President Tshisekedi.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Lukonde Kyenge emphasized the historical relations between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, celebrating what he described as Morocco’s “constant support” for his country.

He also underlined Morocco’s growing role as a key actor on the African continent, noting that the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss several issues of mutual interest.

Relations between Rabat and Kinshasa have continued to develop in recent years, particularly in political coordination and economic cooperation.

DR Congo is among African countries that have shown support for Morocco’s positions on strategic issues, including the Western Sahara issue.

In April last year, the country officially rejected a memorandum of understanding that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR) signed, stating that the agreement is not legally binding.

The Congolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed that the country remains sovereign in its position and clearly supports Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. It also reiterated its backing of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the most viable solution within the United Nations-led political process.

The DRC’s stance aligns with that of several other African countries, including Malawi, Zambia, the Comoros, and Eswatini, all of which have also rejected the agreement. This reflects a broader shift across Africa in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Most recently, Mali announced on Friday that it is withdrawing recognition of SADR and expressed its backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara.
