Walid Regragui Leaves Morocco National Team Role

Rabat – Walid Regragui’s time as head coach of Morocco’s national football team has officially come to an end after the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the coach agreed to terminate his contract, the French sports newspaper L’Equipe reported earlier today.

The decision had been expected for several weeks. According to reports from sources cited by French newspapers L’Equipe and Le Parisien, Regragui signed the termination of his contract a few days ago after discussions with the federation.

His contract was normally set to run until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Regragui’s departure comes shortly after the end of the Africa Cup of Nations, where Morocco reached the final but lost to Senegal in a controversial match.

Despite the prospect of only departing after leading Morocco at the upcoming World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19, the 50-year-old coach reportedly chose not to continue his journey with the Atlas Lions.

Sources cited by French media suggested that Regragui had been exhausted after the continental tournament and wanted to step away from the role.

Rumors about his potential departure had circulated earlier this year. Several Moroccan outlets reported on February 6 that he might resign, but the Moroccan federation publicly denied those claims at the time.

Regragui’s tenure as national team coach

Regragui leaves the national team after one of the most successful periods in Moroccan football history. Appointed on August 31, 2022, he quickly transformed the team into a major force on the international stage.

Under his leadership, Morocco reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African and Arab team to reach that stage of the tournament. More recently, the Atlas Lions reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

His overall record with the national team includes 35 wins, 9 draws, and 5 defeats. During his tenure, Morocco also climbed to eighth place in the FIFA world rankings, the highest position ever achieved by an African nation.

As Atlas Lions fans and watchers of Moroccan football make sense of this critical departure, attention now turns to who will lead Morocco into the 2026 World Cup. Reports indicate that Mohamed Ouahbi, currently in charge of Morocco’s U-20 national team, is expected to take over the role.

Joao Sacramento and former Morocco international Youssouf Hadji are reportedly set to join the coaching staff as assistants.
