FRMF Denies Reports on Walid Regragui’s Departure as Atlas Lions Coach

Rabat – Contrary to recent rumors, Walid Regragui remains the head coach of Morocco’s Atlas Lions, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) confirmed today, putting an end to weeks of speculation about his future, again.

“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF|) denies the circulating reports about its separation from coach Walid Regragui,” FRMF wrote in a one-sentence statement.

The statement comes a few weeks after a similar press release in which FRMF categorically denied media reports claiming Regragui had stepped down as the head coach of Morocco’s national team.

Media coverage pointing to Regragui’s potential exit intensified after Morocco’s disappointing loss in the chaotic AFCON final on January 18.

That final was marked by disruptions, including the Senegalese team leaving the pitch for nearly 15 minutes, fans attempting to storm the field, and incidents of vandalism. These moments overshadowed Morocco’s historic campaign while reigniting debate about Regragui’s squad and tactical decisions.

Throughout the tournament, Regragui faced criticism over his tactics and squad selection, including his decision to call up players who were already injured, such as the now-retired Romain Saïss.

He defended his approach during the tournament, saying he still believed himself to be the best coach with whom this group of Atlas Lions could win major titles, including the African tournament.

“Yes, I still think so; otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here. I have even more confidence than everyone else. I believe in this group and this team. And we know that in any competition—especially the Africa Cup of Nations—it’s at the end of the show that the musicians get paid.”

Speculation had also suggested Regragui might leave for Olympique de Marseille to replace Mehdi Benatia, fueled by his previous statements that he would step down if Morocco failed to secure the AFCON trophy.
