Rabat – US Congressman Joe Wilson issued yet another strongly worded remark, addressing Algeria’s regime regarding its stance on Western Sahara and Algiers’ alliance with Russia.
In a post on X today, Wilson urged Algeria’s regime to join the growing chorus in support of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan if it seeks a “better future” for the country and its people.
Wilson commended President Donald Trump and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff for their efforts aimed at encouraging reconciliation between Morocco and Algeria, adding that such progress could reshape regional dynamics.
“Grateful for President Trump and Special Envoy Witkoff’s incredible efforts encouraging PEACE between Morocco and Algeria, which could, as a result, help expel War Criminal Putin from North Africa,” he wrote.
His remarks come as the US and the UN are facilitating discussions in a meeting convening the parties to the Western Sahara dispute, including Algeria, Morocco, Polisario, and Mauritania.
Reports confirmed the presence of Witkoff and US advisor Massad Boulos in the meeting. Both officials have acknowledged in recent interviews that the US is ready and committed to mediate between Algeria and Morocco.
For years, Algeria’s regime has been adopting a hostile approach targeting Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara by backing Polisario’s independence claims.
In addition to endorsing separatism against Morocco, Algeria’s regime also launched several maneuvers against Morocco, cutting ties with Rabat over several allegations, including accusing its neighbor of causing wildfires that were originally triggered by rising temperatures in 2021.
Algeria’s regime has also recalled various ambassadors of nations that decided to join the international momentum in supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible or only political framework to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
Many observers like Wilson have been urging Algeria’s regime to abandon its unproductive attempts in challenging Morocco’s territorial integrity and join more than 120 countries in supporting Morocco’s proposal for the Sahra dispute.
He has also urged the US to designate Polisario as a terrorist group, and has helped table a bill to urge the congress to do so.
Today on X, Wilson recalled the same appeal, telling Algeria, “If you leave your buddies War Criminal Putin, the terrorist regime in Iran, and tyrant Kais Saied, there could be a great future for Algeria and its incredible people!”
Morocco cut ties with Iran in 2018 over Iranian proxy Hezbollah’s collusion with Polisario.
Iran denied the links, but Morocco has frequently stressed it has presented detailed evidence to Iran on “the role of Hezbollah” and Iranian officials involved with military training and arms delivery for the Polisario Front separatists.
For Wilson, there is no way for Algeria other than “dumping the Polisario communist terrorists destabilizing Morocco and trying to establish a Marxist state in the desert and instead supporting the just solution of autonomy for the Sahrawi people.’
The congressman believes that better relations with the US can offer “so much economically and militarily” to Algeria.
Algeria has recently denied negotiating a peace deal with Morocco, challenging recent statements by both Wiktoff and Boulos.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf said in November last year that he was surprised by the US officials’ remarks.
“I was surprised by this statement, because personally I am not aware of any project for a peace agreement between the two countries mentioned,” he said.
He claimed that there was confusion regarding what the US is trying to do regarding the Western Sahara issue and Algerian-Moroccan relations.
