Rabat – A routine inspection at Beni Ansar Port in Nador turned into a major seizure on Saturday, after Moroccan security services and customs officials found more than 13 kilograms of smuggled gold hidden inside a vehicle.
The car, which carried foreign registration plates, had arrived earlier on a maritime crossing from a European port.
During border checks, officers detected irregularities that led to a thorough search.
Authorities then discovered gold bars carefully concealed inside the vehicle, with a total weight of 13.506 kilograms.
The driver, a Moroccan national, fell under arrest shortly after the discovery. Judicial authorities placed the suspect under investigation, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Investigators now seek to determine how the gold entered the smuggling circuit, trace possible accomplices, and assess whether the case connects to wider networks operating across borders.
The seizure shows continued vigilance at Moroccan ports, where security services face persistent attempts to exploit maritime routes for illicit trade.
