Rabat – The Moroccan government has provided direct financial assistance to 15,000 families affected by recent floods in the northern and western regions of the country, Budget Minister Fouzi Lekjaa announced on Thursday.
Speaking at a press briefing following the weekly meeting of the Government Council, Lekjaa said each family received MAD 6,000 ($570) as part of the state’s emergency support initiative for households displaced by flash floods and who had to relocate to safer areas. The minister stressed the importance of ensuring that aid reaches those who genuinely need it.
Under royal directives, the government has also put in place further support measures tailored to the varying degrees of damage to homes:
- Families returning to partially damaged homes will receive MAD 15,000 ($1,425) to carry out necessary internal repairs.
- The same amount — MAD 15,000 ($1,425) — has been allocated to owners of commercial premises that were damaged by the floods.
- In rural areas where houses were completely destroyed, families will receive MAD 140,000 ($13,300) per collapsed dwelling to assist with reconstruction, based on damage assessments by local authorities.
Lekjaa noted that the floods caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and rural tracks. He confirmed that the Ministry of Equipment and Transport of Morocco, other relevant ministries, and local authorities have already begun repair and restoration work, prioritizing areas based on the extent of destruction.
The government is also extending support to the agricultural sector, which was heavily impacted by the flooding. Following the king’s instructions, direct financial support will be provided to affected farmers to help them resume agricultural activities during the current spring cycle. This includes assistance for livestock breeders and crop producers, with necessary funds allocated to affected farms to help them recover quickly and return to normal operations.
The minister emphasized that the comprehensive support program — backed by a MAD 3 billion budget — has been designed with clear conditions and criteria, ensuring smooth implementation and understanding by beneficiaries. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the immediate needs of affected communities while facilitating long‑term recovery efforts.
